Hi, im in the uk and have had raging high blood pressure since i was 17 and am on regular medication.
I am on my medication for 6 months then they wean me off it for a while for a few months or so because my doc says he doesnt want me on medication permanently yet because by the time im older i will be immune to the tablets as i have been on it so early in my life and my body has had time to be converted into used to the tablets.

To help in other ways i find that using low sodium salt helps.
I dont get as many chest pains as i used to by using the new salt.

Fantastic question (and a commone one!)

Diet and lifestyle changes are doubtless the largest thing. Meds can be used to get your BP down before it causes too much hurt, but it’s better to address the issue without medication over the long haul.

The first step is to start being paid educated, as you are now. I recommend joining the Yahoo! bloodpressureline group for more excellent information and a receptive group (including a fantastic doctor who specializes in the control of hypertension).

I reckon it’s vital to watch your BP regularly (at least day after day) and then start trying the most likely changes:

    1. Cut back on sodium intake (it’s really pretty simple).
    2. Increase potassium intake (bananas and oranges, among other fresh fruits)
    3. Reduce BMI to < 25% (this is huge). See the DASH and Rice diets.
    4. Get regular exercise (6-7 days/week)
    5. Quit any of those nasty habits such as excessive drinking, smoking, etc.)
    6. Make sure you don’t have sleep apnea.
    7. Have your vitamin D levels checked (they are chronically low in our society, and such low levels can cause a host of problems).
    The list goes on!

JNC 7 guidelines define that you worry about BP when its above 140/90. Why are you on prescription? Anyways, just sought after to let you know taht in yung public high BP could be because of kidney problems. Question your doc about it.

Somebody has doubtless already told you this but salt would be the first thing to cut from your diet. It promotes fluid retention and increases blood pressure.

  • Chali:

Most vital: maintain normal consequence (avoid overweight or obesity)
    Also restrict salt intake.
    Exercise.

  • pontypines:

Exercise is the most vital step.

Lose consequence if you need to.

Hawthorn – from the health food shop

Cut down on fatty, salty foods – eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

    Try to avoid stress

    Drink plenty of fill up

Eat less animal stout, like cheese, eggs & meat.
    Don’t eat before bed.
